Default an icon on my nokia lumia indicates a high-speed data connection is open - do i need to leave it open

I'm wondering whether there is some data being transferred, or whether it's just telling me a connection is available.

How can I tell?

Is it likely to drain the battery quickly if I leave it on?

Last, but not least - how do I turn it off?!?
