Default "Atheists are intolerant" says head of BBC Trust Chris Patten

When such recognised and respected figures like BBC Trust Chairman Chris Patten call atheists "intolerant" it's time to take notice. Speaking recently Mr Patten said, "It is curious that atheists have proved to be so intolerant of those who have a faith."

I agree entirely with his views and it is nice to have such an esteemed gentleman speaking the truth few want to hear.

Do you agree with Mr Patten's views?

That's a bit like blaming the Jews for hating Nazis aint it?

Atheists are just as intolerant of religion as Christians (and many other religious people) are of other religions.

All groups of people are intolerant to some degree. Or rather, all groups of people contain people who are intolerant to some degree.

Please dont tell me when it is time for me to take notice. I can think for myself. And this is not one of those times.

"Do you agree with Mr Patten's views?"

No. Mr. Patten's generalization is just that - a generalization, and thus is just as often right as it is wrong (in this case, wrong).

Mr Pattern is an intolerant bigot himself - put in place to ensure the BBC retains a religious bias.
Its no accident that most of the BBC top management are religious fruitcakes Tony Bliar ensured this when he stuffed the BBC with the religious.

I'm sure Mr Patten will remove the BAN on atheists appearing on radio 4's thought for the day - in the interests of tolerance and allow an equal number of atheist programmes to appear to balance the 100s of hours of religious programmes.

Thought not the man is a disgusting BIGOT himself.

So the group that's being persecuted is supposed to be tolerant of that persecution? That doesn't make any sense at all. Tell you what, get your religion out of my laws and politics and I'll be more tolerant of your religion.

Are all Muslims terrorists?
Are all Germans Nazis?
Are all Americans stupid?
Are all blondes brainless?
Are all Christians fundies?
Do all Arabs hate Jews?
Are all Jews Orthodox?
Are all French arrogant?
Do all Spaniards love flamenco?
Do all Finns drink their heads off?
Do all Canadians say "eh"?

etc.

In short, not all atheists are intolerant.

No idea who he is, and atheists are intolerant of people who have faith when those people try to foist it on others and enact laws based on their religious delusions. So, he could very well be right. Too bad he made a sweeping statement and failed to support it with any examples. Nice to see that most people rejected his comments and question his leadership.

I disagree with him. His opinion is biased, he doesn't understand the continuous intolerance that atheists have to deal with.
Just today I ran into a blogpost which deals exactly with this issue (see sources). A quote from that post:

"Thus we must conclude that it's not the case that atheists are especially rude in what they are saying and doing, but that they are treated as not being entitled to same social privileges and behaviors as Christians. Attacks on atheists for being rude, intolerant, disrespectful, and militant are just part of a long string of attempts to enforce or promote Christian privilege in society."

Also of note is that church attendance, religious adherence and even faith itself is on a steady decline in the UK (and other European countries). That the BBC programming reflects its public is only to be expected.
The religious leaders protests are mostly tries to gain back their influence, which is not likely to happen.
