Default unlocked blackberry initialization failed

i bought an unlocked bb bold 9700(telus) on ebay
and i checked that it was unlocked by typing MEPD(everything was disabled)
however, when i insert a sim card from fido, the phone says initialization failed
and the signal says SOS
the sim card is not defective because it works on fido phone
is this phone still locked? or what is wrong? :'(
it is my first time with bb so i have no idea whats going on..

Telus operates on 850/1900 HSPA frequencies. This is not GSM retro compatible and so you have to ensure the phone from Asia is HSPA compatible. LTE frequency for Telus should be 700 band. So best to research and check the IMEI to see for certain.

Since its inception, the Fido network runs on GSM 1900 and offers coverage in majory urban areas in Canada. This network continues to exist today. Similarly, HSPA+ service is available in 850 MHz and 1900 MHz frequencies.

Summary:
Your Telus blackberry phone is HSPA and not backwards compatible with GSM, your service provider works in GSM and HSPA+. You may need to change in your settings what the BlackBerry is recognizing as the default network (GSM or HSPA+). Alternatively I could also conclude that your Sim may simply be GSM based making it not compatible with the phone.
